Jackson grew up in Ontario and went to the US in 1957. He acted as head of the theory group at Fermilab in Batavia, Ill., and later as head of the physics division at the Lawrence Berkeley Lab. He is the author of two well known works, Physics of Elementary Particles, 1958, and Classical Electrodynamics, 1962.
